Florida Watermelons Distributed To Area Food Pantries

Posted: Updated:

LEBANON, Tenn. – Over 42,000 pounds of watermelon were brought from Florida to the Joseph Storehouse in Lebanon where it was distributed to food pantries throughout the Middle Tennessee.

The Society of St. Andrew runs the grass-roots program, but the manpower comes from volunteers. Tennessee's program coordinator, Linda Tozer, said sometimes the biggest impact comes from keeping it simple.

"It's at the grass-roots level. We try not to make it too complicated. It's as simple as you know, get the food and get the food to the people that need the food. We don't fool with the money or anything. It's just freely given, freely given away," said Tozer.

Since the program started - the Society of St. Andrews has provided Middle Tennessee with 2.5 million pounds of food.
