SMYRNA, Tenn. – Nissan announced Thursday that it will add 900 new jobs at its Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant to support future production of the Rogue crossover SUV.

Thursday's announcement is in addition to 800 jobs added at the Smyrna plant last year, and will bring total employment at the suburban Nashville facility to more than 7,000.

Hiring is already underway and Rogue production is scheduled to begin this fall. The Rogue had previously been produced out of Kyushu plant in Japan.

Building the Rogue in the United States for the first time is part of the Japanese automaker's plan to have 85 percent of its domestic sales to be produced in North America.

"Our investment creates hundreds of new jobs and underscores Nissan's longtime commitment to our employees and expanding operations around the country," said Senior Vice President of Manufacturing Bill Krueger. "Our dedicated workforce in the United States continues to build high-quality vehicles, such as the Altima, Pathfinder and LEAF, which are driving growth with sales up a combined 70 percent in May."

This month marks the 30th anniversary of Nissan producing vehicles in the U.S. The plant in Smyrna built its first pickup truck in June 1983. The plant also makes Nissan's most popular car, the midsize Altima sedan, among other models.

Last year, Smyrna became home to the country's largest lithium-ion automotive battery plant for the electric, zero-emission 2013 Nissan LEAF, as well as a new paint plant.

"Today's announcement shows the strength of the company and is another milestone in the long success story of Nissan here in Tennessee," Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said in a statement. "I want to congratulate Nissan for their accomplishments over the last 30 years and the tremendous impact their success has had on the state's economy and the thousands of people they employ."

Nissan also has a vehicle assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, and a powertrain plant in Decherd, Tennessee. Along with the Smyrna plant, they have produced more than 12 million vehicles and created more than 14,000 manufacturing jobs in the U.S.
