Road Construction Project Worries Murfreesboro Businesses

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Proponents of a major road construction project in the mid-state said it will help get traffic moving in one of the busiest intersections in Tennessee, but nearby business owners are worried that change will cost them business.

It's a project in Murfreesboro that's been in the works for nearly a decade.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation said it wants to completely reconstruct the intersection at Broad Street and Memorial Boulevard.  Some businesses nearby worry the two-year construction project could put a dent in their sales.

"We'll go from being on the busiest street corner on a state-owned road in Tennessee to a back entrance to a frontage-type property," said Joe Chambers, owner of Chambers Guitars.

Chambers said TDOT paid him a half million dollars to make up for the potential loss in business and for taking over part of his store.

TDOT and the city of Murfreesboro will hold public meetings about the construction this fall.
