6-Year-Old Dies After Accidental Shooting In Hopkinsville

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. – A 6-year-old girl has died after an accidental shooting at a Hopkinsville home on Sunday.

The Kentucky New Era reported the young girl passed away late Sunday night at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville.

Police were called to the home on Linda Drive around 9:40 a.m. Police said the victim was accidentally shot in the face by her 4-year-old brother with a .38 caliber gun.

Officials reported the gun belonged to the grandfather, who had walked away for a moment when the 4-year-old child picked up the gun, and pointed it at the victim when the gun discharged.

"He was going to clean the gun, set the gun down, left the area for just a second and heard the shot," said Chief Guy Howie with the Hopkinsville Police Department.

"People have to be careful. If they're going to have a weapon they have to be responsible, and it's unfortunate that it takes tragedy for people to come to the realization they have to be responsible," said neighbor Rochelle Mendoza.

No names were released. At this point, it was unclear if any charges would be filed against the grandfather.

The investigation was ongoing.
