Sears In Cool Springs Closing To Make More Room For Mall

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - After nearly 22 years, Sears will soon shut its doors at the CoolSprings Galleria in Franklin.

The store's closing is part of a bigger plan for the shopping mall which has been a hot shopping spot in Middle Tennessee since 1991. However, the mall has run out of room.

"To get new stores in here, to have the ability to have those new stores, we have to have more space," said Dana KatterJohn with CBL & Associates Properties.

So the mall's owners -- CBL and Associates -- set its eyes on Sears. The company purchased the department store, which will close in six months.

"And then after that time we would have that space back and then we can start the redevelopment process. But they will continue with business as usual through the end of this year," explained KatterJohn.

CBL will redevelop both floors of the Sears store, and make it a continuous part of the mall, adding 116-thousand square feet of additional retail space.

"Our focus is on retailers that aren't in the market. So this will be an excellent opportunity to attract those retailers that have been trying to get Nashville, but did not find the right space," added KatterJohn.

The mall's expansion could go a long way in helping corporate recruitment in the Cool Springs area.

"There are two things; education, which is at the top of the list for companies that are looking to move here. And then the quality of life piece, which encompasses so many different things," said Jeremiah Pyron with the Williamson County Chamber of Commerce.

It'll be more than a year before those new stores open inside the expanded CoolSprings Galleria.

Negotiations are already underway with several upper-end retailers with interest in moving into the expanded portion of the CoolSprings Galleria. The mall's owners expect to announce the names of some of those stores in a few months.
