20 Displaced, 1 Hurt In 2-Alarm Apartment Fire In North Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Twenty people were displaced and one was hurt in 2-alarm apartment fire early Thursday morning.

When fire crews first got on the scene around 4:30 a.m., heavy flames were shooting through the roof of one of the buildings at the Cobblestone Corners Apartments on Ben Allen Road, just off Ellington Parkway.

Catherine Stewart was the first to wake up to flames.

"The smoke was jet black, black, black, black. It just covered the house," she said.

"My gown caught on fire and it went to my head and I tried to get it out. It was burning real fast and I got it over my head," Stewart added.

Stewart suffered some minor burns, but grabbed her child and knocked on everyone's doors to get them out safely.

"Everybody would have been dead if nobody beat on (our) door," said resident Charlotte Jennings. "Everybody in that building would have been dead."

Stewart was later taken to the hospital to be checked out.

"I didn't hear a smoke alarm until we was outside and it was too late then because the fire was already up there," said Brenda Rutledge Davis. "Didn't no alarms go off before then."

It took firefighters about two hours to completely extinguish the fire. Officials said it was a tough fire to battle, but they sprayed water from above to put out the flames. They switched out firefighters as they worked to put out hot spots in the building.

"One burned first, the upstairs burned second, I burned third and the people downstairs burned fourth," Jennings said about watching each apartment go up in flames. "It burned up one by one."

The building of 8 units was destroyed, leaving 16 adults and four children displaced. The Red Cross responded to help those residents.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
