NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State Senator Stacey Campfield has handed information over to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation about automated phone calls in June that asked callers for their opinion of the Knoxville Republican.

Campfield told the Knoxville News Sentinel that he provided information including emails from people saying they received up to 30 calls. He asked for an investigation, saying the repeated calls might have violated anti-harassment laws.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Agent Darren DeArmond took the information provided by Campfield to Knox County District Attorney General Randy Nichols. In Tennessee, a formal TBI investigation has to be requested by the district attorney general in most cases.

Nichols said he asked the TBI to get more information and would determine from that whether to request a formal investigation.
