CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A court date has been scheduled for the man accused of causing a death on the Cumberland River in Montgomery County

A preliminary hearing for 23-year-old Douglas Jackson has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 10.

Police said Jackson was driving the boat that hit and killed 21-year-old Stephanie Burns in Clarksville on June 29.

Witnesses said the group on the water had been drinking and Jackson playfully pushed two people off the boat and into the water.

They said Jackson drove away, but decided to turn around when someone told him Burns couldn't swim.

According to police records, he drove towards the swimmers at a high rate of speed and then ran over them.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency official Doug Markham said Burns got caught in the propeller of the boat. She was dead when first responders arrived on the scene.

A 20-year-old man was also injured. The man, who had not been identified, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His condition was not been released, but officials said he was expected to recover from his injuries.

Jackson was also accused of trying to get rid of alcohol containers before officials arrived.

Officers said he did not visually appear to be drunk, but blood sample results were pending.

Jackson was charged with vehicular homicide. Bond was set at $403,000.
