NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A father and his infant son were killed in a single-vehicle crash in southeast Nashville on Sunday after the vehicle ran off the roadway.

Officials responded to the crash in the 5900 block of Pettus Road around 3 p.m. Officials said 24-year-old Ebony Scales was driving a 2007 Ford Fusion and traveled onto the right grass shoulder before losing control of the car. The car then crossed the opposite lane of traffic, went off the roadway and struck a tree.

The front seat passenger, 26-year-old Jonathan Meza, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The couple's 11-month-old son Robert Meza was in the rear of the car in a child seat. He was transported to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital with critical injuries where he later died.

Scales, the driver, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and was in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Police said there was no evidence at the scene of alcohol or drug involvement. The crash was still under investigation.
