NewsChannel 5 Partners With Red Cross For Blood Drive

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – NewsChannel 5 partnered with the Red Cross for its summer blood drive on Monday, the same day they put out an emergency appeal for all blood types.

Officials said they saw 10 percent fewer donors in June, and another drastic drop in donations over the first week of July.

"I think people go on vacation, a lot of families go out of town for the Fourth of July. And schools are out. And believe it or not, schools make up a third of our blood supply here in Middle Tennessee and parts of southern Kentucky, and really throughout the region," said spokesperson Regina Raccuglia. "And so when schools are out, we notice a significant drop there."

One donation can save up to three lives. The blood and platelets collected in Nashville go to hospitals throughout the area.

The Nashville Donor Center on Charlotte Avenue will be open for donations until 6:15 p.m.

Additionally, the Golden Living Center in Gallatin, Chaney's Dairy Barn in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and the Smith County Community Center in Carthage will open until 7 p.m.
