NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Some parents and teachers headed back to school early to check out Nashville's newest Charter school.

Intrepid College Prep is located along Bell Forge Lane East in Antioch, and parents said they are thrilled to have a new school in the neighborhood.

"It's right in the heart of Antioch," said parent Shauna Malone. "It's in a good setting, and hopefully is a sign of even more new development in the area."

At a reception Monday, parents got to tour the facility for the first time.  Nashville Mayor Karl Dean also attended, and praised various officials who worked to make sure the school was ready to open its doors.  He said the school opening will be a big moment for the city and the Antioch community.

"This is a great example of what can happen when people work together," said Mayor Karl Dean. "When people have dreams, and when people want something better for their children."

Currently, 98 5th graders are enrolled in the school.  Intrepid officials said the school's philosophy is based around rigorous academics, parental involvement, and ensuring students are prepared for college.

"Intrepid is really intentional about empowering students to attend college, pursue their dreams, and ensuring students have tools to pursue those dreams," said teacher Hattie Duplechain.

"We're hoping to change the lives of prepsters, their parents and their children," said Intrepid Founder and Executive Director Mia Howard.  "That's three generations of work, and it's really exciting."

Intrepid begins the school year July 30 with one grade level, but officials plan to add a grade level each year and ultimately have students in grades 5-12.  It is one of five new charter schools opening in Nashville this year.
