CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Austin Peay defensive end Earnest Smith will miss the entire 2013 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Smith underwent surgery last week after getting hurt during a June 20 conditioning drill. The university put out a release Monday indicating Smith will miss the entire season.
Smith is a fifth-year senior on track to graduate in December. He was chosen as his team's most outstanding defensive player last year.
Austin Peay athletic department spokesman Brad Kirtley says it's uncertain whether Smith would petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.
Smith, a former walk-on, had 44 tackles and four sacks last season. He led the Governors with nine tackles for loss.
Austin Peay, a Football Championship Subdivision program, opens its season August 31 at Tennessee.
