NASHVILLE, Tenn.- They're creepy, pesky pests, and they are making their presence known in Nashville.

A new report by Terminix found Nashville is one of the top 15 cities in the country with the largest increase in bed bug infestations.  Local calls are up 17 percent.

Terminix Pest Service Manager Andy Paolini said as Nashville has grown, so has the bed bug problem.

"There is a lot of international travel to and from our hub," said Paolini. "We've seen a rise since the rise of international travel."

Officials with the Metro Public Health Department reported they have received calls from people in apartments and extended stay hotels and motels. Bed bugs are large enough to see, and officials encourage people to be on the lookout for them.

"They often hide in mattresses and furniture," said Brian Todd with the Metro Public Health Department. "Eliminate clutter, like piles of clothes or any place where they can burrow.  If you are traveling be aware."

Paolini said if you suspect a problem, the best course of action is to call a professional.

"Act quickly, and let someone who is qualified inspect the infestation."

The city with the highest increase in bed bug infestations is Sacramento, California. Other cities on the list include Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Dallas.
