Saint Thomas Health Renames Five Member Hospitals

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Saint Thomas Health officials announced name changes to their five member hospitals in Middle Tennessee, including Saint Thomas and Baptist Hospital.

The system's flagship hospital known as Saint Thomas Hospital will become Saint Thomas West and Middle Tennessee Medical Center will be Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

Crews changed out signs at Baptist Hospital Thursday morning ahead of the announcement. Baptist will now be known as Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital.

That doesn't mean a facility like Baptist will lose its heritage. Officials at the midtown location said they're looking to name a street on campus Baptist Way.

"We'll have history walls, and as those big huge letters come down off Baptist we'll have some ceremony and some ritual related to our faith-based history," said Dr. Michael Schatzlein, president and CEO of Saint Thomas Health.

The other two hospitals with name changes include Hickman Community Hospital and The Hospital for Spinal Surgery. They will be known respectively as Saint Thomas Hickman Hospital and Saint Thomas Hospital for Spinal Surgery.

Officials said they based their decision on extensive research and as part of their "strategic direction. Physician practices owned by Saint Thomas Health and joint ventures in which the health care system participates will also be unified under the Saint Thomas Health banner.

That includes the Tennessee Titans practice facility, which has been renamed Saint Thomas Sports Park.
