Vanderbilt Identifies Players Dismissed From Team

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt University has released the names of the four football players dismissed from the team for violation of team rules in June.

University officials said Brandon Banks, Corey Batey, Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie and Brandon Vandenburg will not be a part of the 2013 roster. Vanderbilt dismissed the players June 29 for an incident being investigated by the Metro Nashville Police Department.

Head coach James Franklin issued a statement regarding the incident:

"For student athletes at Vanderbilt, it is a privilege, not a right, to be a part of the program. My coaching staff and I make sure every member of our team understands that. We insist on high standards of personal responsibility and integrity, and there are consequences when those standards are not met."

Vanderbilt released its media guide for the upcoming season Tuesday at the start of the Southeastern Conference media days, and the players won't be listed.

The students were also suspended from the university pending further investigation.

Officials said the university reported the matter to the Metro Nashville Police Department and was fully cooperating with the Metro Police investigation.

This incident surrounds an investigation into an alleged sexual assault in a dorm on the Vanderbilt campus.

Police said Monday that they were still actively investigating, saying "Sex Crimes cases such as this take time and involve interviews with a number of persons and evidence analysis by police department electronics experts and TBI scientists who specialize in DNA. It is not uncommon for initial evidence analysis to provide detectives with additional detail that requires further investigation."

The university said it will make further comments when appropriate.

Charges have not been filed at present.
