Alabama Man Killed In Giles County Plane Crash

Posted: Updated:

PULASKI, Tenn. – A pilot from Alabama was killed after crashing his plane shortly after takeoff from an airport in Giles County on Tuesday morning.

Officials said the Sonerai experimental home-built aircraft took off from Abernathy Field Airport around 8 a.m. when the pilot turned the aircraft around, and crashed on State Highway 11 while heading back to the airport.

The plane burst into flames on impact, killing 24-year-old Cliff Joseph Rosa, an Iraq war veteran from Huntsville, Alabama. He was the only person on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was called to the scene to investigate. It was unclear why the pilot turned around and headed back to the airport.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

The experimental was powered by a modified Volkswagen car engine and Abernathy Field manager Randy Jones said Rosa had flown it only a few times.
