9-Year-Old Seriously Burned In Rutherford County

Posted: Updated:

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. - A 9-year-old boy was badly burned at his aunt's home in Rutherford County on Monday. He was burned from his stomach to his chin, according to first responders.

"He kept saying the sunshine burned him, the sunshine burned him," said Rutherford County Fire Chief Larry Farley. "He kept saying that something else had burned him and that he was more or less afraid that he might be in trouble if he said he was playing with a lighter or playing with matches."

The boy, who lives on Rockvale Road, was staying nearby with his aunt and six siblings and cousins when he apparently set his shirt on fire, according to Rutherford County Sheriff's detective Randy Groce.

His aunt and 11-year-old cousin wrapped a blanket around him to extinguish the fire.

He was then taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where he was listed in stable condition on Tuesday. His name was not immediately released.

Though investigators said the fire was likely accidental, possibly from a lighter, an investigation was underway. Officials urge parents and adults to keep lighters and matches away from children.

"I think there are four or five kids and there was an aunt there watching them," said Farley. "You know kids can get away from you really quick, and you get busy and they're doing stuff. It just really gets down to keeping your eye on the kid."

Several agencies now want to know what happened and determine if this was one incident that could have been avoided.

The Department of Children Services confirmed its agency responded to the scene and has opened up an investigation into the incident.

Fire officials also said there were no working smoking detectors in the house. The Rutherford County Fire Department installed four of them for the family.
