Posted: Updated:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A family pet was killed in a fire that seriously damaged a home in Murfreesboro on Tuesday afternoon.

Fire officials in Murfreesboro said the garage at a home on Council Bluff Parkway went up in flames around 4 p.m.

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze contained to the garage, but the home suffered substantial water and smoke damage to the home. The home could be deemed a total loss.

Due to the high temperatures, off-duty personnel were called in to relieve initial fire crews to prevent any heat-related injuries.

The homeowners were home at the time, and managed to make it out safely; however their pet did not survive.

The Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
