How To Keep Yourself Safe In A Parking Lot

DONELSON, Tenn. -  Wednesday's attack in the parking lot of Opry Mills Mall may have you thinking about your safety. Experts say there are actions you can take to deter a criminal.

"They look for the people that are coming out that are going to be vulnerable, that have got their head somewhere else," said Buford Tune from the Academy of Personal Protection.

Tune said you need to be aware and paying attention as you walk to and from your car.

"You see somebody that don't look right, you watch them as much as they're watching you. Make them as nervous, that they go away. Just by looking at them, smiling, talking to them and letting them leave," Tune said.

If you do come across someone suspicious, Tune said it is important to tell someone.

"Because that person may leave you, and you may turn somebody else into a victim because you just did not think enough to call and notify somebody," Tune said.

You are also encouraged to carry items with you to help fight off a criminal.

"Good pepper spray, a good taser and if you're certified and know what you're doing, carry you a handgun with you," Tune explained.

Being aware of your surrounding is the best line of defense, according to Tune. He said that is the best way to stay out of trouble.

"They look for that easy victim, and the opportunity to go do it. And you help them by leaving that door of opportunity open for them," Tune said.

Experts also said it is smart not to park your vehicle near shrubbery, or large vans with sliding doors.
