Water Main Break Causes Issues In 100 Oaks Area

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a water main break resulted in a day filled with canceled doctor's appointments and dinner plans, business as usual will return in the 100 Oaks area again Friday.

The break in the 12-inch water main happened Thursday morning near the Staples and Taco Bell on Powell Avenue. The Taco Bell along with nearby Panera and Panda Express restaurants closed for the day. The Regal Cinemas movie theater was also quiet Thursday.

Vanderbilt Health 100 Oaks also suffered some water flow problems due to the break. Officials said they contacted patients to reschedule or send them to other clinics. They said they would only see patients that traveled long distances or urgent cases.

Other area businesses had to go without water, and others had reduced water pressure.

Metro Water officials said the water main was 20 feet under the ground, which is deeper than most, and they couldn't reach it with their equipment.  They had to hire a contractor to come in and make the repairs, which set them back hours.

"Typically we are able to get on them really quickly and get them back in service, and people aren't even affected by it," said John Kennedy, the Deputy Director of Metro Water Services. "We deal with these situations a lot, but some go better than others."

Kennedy said he appreciates people being patient while repairs were done.

"This is a pretty inconvenient location obviously with all the businesses, and traffic, but we can't pick our spots," said Kennedy.

Kennedy said "natural causes" forced the water main to break.  In extreme heat, pipes can shift, and the weather may have played a role in this situation.
