NASHVILLE, Tenn. Major construction on Interstate 440 East will once again be a challenge for drivers over the weekend.

Concrete repairs on the eastbound lanes will resume and shut down the portion of the interstate between I-65 and I-24.

Workers will jackhammer deteriorating concrete and pour new pavement as part of a nearly $10 million project to widen eastbound I-440.

The project began Friday, June 28, and will be completed in October.

More than 106,000 vehicles travel the 7.66 mile I-440 corridor each day. It was opened in 1987.

"The alternate way of doing it is closing down a lane at a time for months on end," said Deanna Lambert, spokesperson with the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

There will be no work on holiday weekends and construction is subject to weather conditions.  Due to nice weather last weekend, crews were able to make more progress than during the previous week.

The next seven interstate closures are tentatively planned for the following weekends:

  • July 26th – July 29th
  • August 2nd – August 5th
  • August 9th – August 12th
  • August 16th – August 19th
  • September 6th – September 9th
  • September 13th – September 16th
  • October 11th – October 13th
