Posted: Updated:

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Dozens of people were hospitalized after a fire tore through Cumberland County nursing home.

The fire broke out Friday afternoon at the Wyndridge Rehabilitation and Health Center at 456 Wayne Avenue in Crossville.

Officials with the Crossville Fire Department said 31 people had to be sent to the hospital.

Authorities said 22 patients were taken to Cumberland Medical Center, along with 7 employees and 2 firefighters. Most were treated for smoke inhalation.

The blaze was caused by an air conditioner wall unit in a patient's room. Crews had to break through a window to gain access.

Fire investigators were working to determine why the air conditioning unit caught fire.
