MANCHESTER, Tenn. – Detectives in Manchester have broken up a burglary ring, and recovered a treasure trove of stolen sports collectibles, including game jerseys and autographs of sports legends.

Acting on a tip, detectives searched a home near downtown.

Among other things, they discovered folders full of near-mint condition vintage baseball and basketball cards.

Police also found autographed helmets and player photographs, along with athlete figurines still in the package.

Beyond the sports items, police also confiscated tools and other heavy equipment - all believed to be stolen from local homes and businesses during the past six months and valued at thousands of dollars.

"We estimated $50,000, but I'm thinking maybe $100,000," said Detective Billy Butler. "This is one of the biggest theft ring busts I've seen in 25 years."

It took police four days to collect all the stolen items.

Police have begun the process of returning the recovered items to their owners. They were also in the process of questioning the homeowner where the items were found.

Nine suspects have been identified, but arrests have not been made yet.

Butler said the items stolen were slated to be resold, or in some cases, traded for drugs.

It was possible suspects targeted sports collectibles, but more likely the thieves just stumbled on the cards and helmets at someone's home and recognized they could be resold for big money.
