Local Babies Share Birthday With Royalty

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Many expectant mothers kept a close eye on their televisions Monday as news the Duchess of Cambridge was going into labor the same day they were about to deliver a child.

Kim Cumberland and her husband C. J., arrived at Vanderbilt University Medical Center just after 5:30 a.m. Monday and started watching the events in London.

"During your resting time they tell you to watch. Everyone was just talking about labor and delivery, which is just exciting in itself, because that's what you're experiencing," Cumberland said.

The hours that followed were filled with some tense moments, and the only baby the Cumberlands were focused on at that point was their own.

Then at 2:03 p.m., a healthy Colt Cumberland was born. Not long after, his mother glanced at the television.

"I did look up, and that's pretty much all that's on the news, was that Kate had given birth to a son, and that was exciting," Cumberland explained.

Not too far from 21st Avenue, at TriStar Centennial Women's and Children's Hospital, Camden Oldham came into the world, just 19 minutes after Colt.

"This date's been set for a couple of months," said father Steve Oldham.

His wife gave birth to their son Camden at 1:44 p.m. Monday by cesarean section. Oldham had no idea what was happening in London when the couple left for the hospital in the morning.

Oldham was much more interested in the birth of his own son than the new prince in Britain.

"She said ‘the Royal baby is going to be born today.' I said, ‘I know, that's what we're going to the hospital for.' She said, ‘no, the other Royal baby.' I said, ‘yeah, ok,'" Oldham explained.

Camden was the Oldham's third child and arrived with a story not many others will have.

"It's really neat, that for his life he gets to share that date with somebody a complete culture and world away," Oldham said. "We'll get to tell people for his whole life, that he was born on the same day as royalty."

Hillary Scott from Lady Antebellum also gave birth to her child on Monday. Eisele Kaye Tyrrell was born at a Nashville-area hospital.
