MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Murfreesboro Police Officer and his wife were arrested Monday night after authorities said they sold their television for prescription painkillers.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation arrested 43-year-old Andrew Messick and his wife 44-year-old Crystal Messick in a Walgreens parking lot off Memorial Boulevard Monday night.

They were charged with simple possession and casual exchange of a controlled substance.

Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation received information about the couple wanting to exchange a television for hydrocodone pills. They set up the exchange, and took them into custody.

"I think most of the police officers and the administration are shocked. It's something, when we learned about it, was certainly shocking and unfortunately we have to move forward with the administrative process at this point," said Kyle Evans, spokesperson for the Murfreesboro Police Department.

Messick was a three-year veteran with the department. With the exception of a couple of minor traffic accidents with his patrol car, his personnel file was very clean.

He received a letter of commendation for helping the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office disarm a suicidal teenager two years ago.

"Officer Messick began his service with the Department in 2010. Since then he has been an exemplary officer, said Evans.

Before joining the force Messick was a practicing attorney. His father was an assistant chief at the department in the 1990s.

The couple was booked into the Rutherford County Jail and released on bond.

Murfreesboro police said Messick has been decommissioned and relieved of all police authority.

Messick was a member of the Uniformed Division and Patrol Section.

Officials with the Murfreesboro Police Department said Messick served all of his time in the patrol division. He may have taken some reports, but he was never involved in any drug investigations.
