School Gets Volunteers, Seniors Learn Computers

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A struggling middle school in Chattanooga has started a new initiative aimed at getting more community members to help students by volunteering.

Orchard Knob Middle School offered senior citizens a free computer class in exchange for at least 10 hours of volunteer time at the facility. Both sides say they saw the swap as a bargain.

The recent class offered the basics to seniors, including what each part of a computer does and explaining how popular programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel work.

Those who participated will, in turn, become involved at the school, which leaders say is important in helping it turn around and make significant improvements.

Principal Crystal Sorrells says officials need more involvement from parents, grandparents and other community members to make the biggest positive impact.
