Two Arrested After Standoff Situation In Smyrna

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Tenn. – Two people were arrested after a standoff situation in Smyrna Tuesday after SWAT teams entered a home on Carter Lane and Almaville Road.

Authorities said it started as a domestic dispute around 10 a.m. between Jeff Joyce and his sister Ashley Michelle Joyce. Jeff was staying the night with his girlfriend at his sister's boyfriend's house.

According to police, Jeff and his girlfriend said they woke up to his sister and her boyfriend demanding they needed to take them somewhere. At that point, Jeff decided to leave with his girlfriend. That's when Jeff's sister came out and reportedly physically assaulted both her brother and the girlfriend. Then the sister's boyfriend came out to the car and allegedly pointed a handgun at both of them, threatening their life. The police were called.

When Smyrna Police arrived on scene, they said they attempted to make contact with Joyce and her boyfriend Jonathan Scott Ashley and they both refused. The SWAT team was called to the scene, and worked to negotiate with the couple for a couple of hours to no avail.

Tear gas was released into the home around 2 p.m. and both surrendered peacefully to police.

Smyrna Fire Department was called to the scene after the tear gas ignited something in the home.

Jonathan Scott Ashley, 27, was charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault. Ashley Michelle Joyce, 23, was charged with one count of Domestic Violence and one count of Simple Assault.
