Eastbound I-40/I-24 Merge Blocked Near Downtown

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 were blocked after a semi ran off the road and jack-knifed. At least one other vehicle was hit.

The crash happened around 11:50 a.m. Thursday at exit 221B where the interstate merges with eastbound traffic from Interstate 24.

The semi was traveling eastbound on I-40 when it crossed both lanes of I-24, struck the guardrail and went down the embankment. The semi was hauling a flat-bed trailer with no load.

A white sedan was damaged. The cause of the crash was not available.

One ambulance responded to the scene, but information about any injuries was not immediately available.

Eastbound traffic was reduced to one lane. Traffic was backed up for several blocks on I-40 and past to the north loop on I-24.

Lanes were cleared by around 1:15 p.m., but traffic was still moving slowly through the area.

The left lane of westbound I-40 was also closed. Officials expected to clear the scene by 2:30 p.m.

Officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the scene. At least three incident response vehicles from the Tennessee Department of Transportation were directing traffic. Three wreckers were also on the scene working to remove the vehicles.
