NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The superintendent of Metro Nashville Public Schools system is asking the school board to add five more class days to the academic year.

Dr. Jesse Register will make the recommendation Tuesday, saying more instructional time will help improve academic performance.

Six of the city's schools are in the second year of a three-year federal grant that pays for more class time. While educators say growth measurements used at the low-performing schools show improvement, individual student tests scores won't be available until later this month.

The request comes after a recent hearing that was dominated by parents who want a return to the former 10-week summer break.
