Alert Off-Duty Officer Spots Suspected Drunk Driver

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A suspected repeat drunk driver was taken into custody Tuesday night after an off-duty officer spotted him driving recklessly.

The officer was on his way home on Interstate 40 in his personal vehicle when he spotted a red pickup truck that was weaving all over the road.

He reported the truck, and on-duty Hermitage officers tried to stop the vehicle. The driver refused to stop, and drove into Wilson County.

Mt. Juliet Police took over the pursuit, and the driver eventually stopped.

Officers said 55-year-old Charles McCabe smelled of alcohol, showed impairment in field sobriety tests, and agreed to a blood test.

McCabe was taken into custody and charged with DUI second offense, felony evading arrest, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and marijuana possession. Officers found a plastic bag containing 20 grams of processed marijuana on the front seat of his vehicle.

His bond was set at $55,000.
