Price Cut On Pet Adoptions In Rutherford County

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Space is limited at the Rutherford County Pet Adoptions and Welfare Services. To help spur the adoption of dogs, the shelter has reduced its fees.

"Dog adoptions have gone down a little bit because of school being back in session," said Michael Gregory, director of Rutherford County PAWS.

The shelter has more dogs coming in, than it has going home with new adoptive families.

"Unfortunately when we do have an animal we simply do not have the space for, and we have animals continuing to come into the shelter, euthanasia is an option," Gregory said.

The shelter director started a new program for dog adoptions on Wednesday where interested adopters can name their own price for the dog they choose.

"People still have certain applications and certain things they have to meet, but they get to name their own price," according to Gregory.

Roommates Katie Parker and Olivia May came to the shelter to look for a dog to bring home with them.

"We wanted a bigger dog, and one that was kind of older," according to Parker.

They looked at the nearly 50 dogs at the shelter and decided on a Collie mix named Mack.

"He just seems really sweet and laid back," Parker said.

When the two roommates came to Rutherford County PAWS, they had no idea Mack would be discounted.

"If you can get them for less money, and that helps a lot to find them good homes," said Parker.

Gregory said adoptions have increased this week, and the lower fee people are paying to adopt dogs really is not a concern.

"Animal control is not a money making business. We'll never be able to bring in enough revenue to offset the cost, it's service to the public. So for us we're looking going, is it worth getting $36 for the animal, or having an animal go down in the back. We'd much rather see it go out the front door," Gregory said.

The name your own dog adoptions continue through 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. You can search www.petharbor.com to see the dogs available for adoptions.
