HERMITAGE, Tenn. - A driver was charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after slamming his car into a power pole Tuesday night, killing his passenger.

Police said 25-year-old Caleb Thomas was driving along the 3000 block of Elm Hill Pike around 9 p.m. when he left the roadway and slammed into the utility pole.

His passenger, 42-year-old Suzanne Moran, was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died.

Thomas suffered minor injuries. Police said he showed indicators of impairment while performing field sobriety tasks and smelled of alcohol. He told police he had consumed three shots of liquor.

Thomas was also charged with driving on a revoked license. He had been scheduled to appear in court next month after receiving a citation in June for driving on a revoked license.

His bond was set at $210,000.

The roadway was blocked while Nashville Electric Service crews replaced the pole.
