Maury County Residents Upset About YMCA Closure Announcement

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, Tenn. – After the YMCA decided to close three of its locations because of loss revenue, many members said they're left with no convenient options.

One group of Maury County seniors said they credit their lives to their workouts. For years they have gone to the Y to keep themselves healthy and alive.

The seniors have been part of the Active Older Adults program. Many joined the YMCA after being advised by their doctors. Since starting the program they said they have been much healthier.

Recently the YMCA of Middle Tennessee decided to close 3 of its 23 locations because of low membership and the money those locations were losing.

A letter recently sent to members said both the Maury County and the Oakwood Commons location in Donelson will close at the end of the year.

The Cool Springs location was already closed in August because of mold.

The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is looking to work with community organizations that may want to purchase and keep the facilities open for the community.

They said the decision to close the locations was not easy for anyone, especially the members affected. Officials said tried to choose locations with minimal impact.

"All of the members being affected by any closure will actually receive 2 free months of an association wide membership to give them the opportunity to try any of our other 20 facilities," said Jessica Fain with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. "We just wanted to give them the opportunity to certainly see if that will work for them."

The Y will continue many of the programs within the community like the Breast Cancer Survivors and their before and after school programs. Both have been offered in Maury County.
