BENTON COUNTY, Tenn. – An 83-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 40 west in Benton County early Thursday morning.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said 56-year-old Carol Ann Williamson, of Huntington West Virginia, was driving a 2003 Pontiac Vibe when it was struck in the rear passenger side by another vehicle. The crash happened near mile marker 128 around 1:10 a.m.

The Vibe then spun off the roadway, hit a culvert, and flipped several times. The passenger, 83-year-old Alice Williamson, also of Huntington, West Virginia, was killed. Carol Ann Williamson was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Both women were wearing their seatbelts.

The other driver did not stop, and the THP said their preliminary investigation showed the vehicle may have been a tractor trailer.

Anyone with information has been asked to call the Tennessee Highway Patrol Jackson District Office at 731-423-6635 or dial *THP (*847) on a mobile device.

The roadway was blocked for several hours while the THP investigated the crash.
