Blount County Addressing Homelessness Problem

Posted: Updated:

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Community organizations and local governments are collaborating on a 10-year plan to address homelessness in Blount County.

The Daily Times reported the Blount County Ecumenical Action Council has been working with United Way of Blount County to develop a plan with local governments and nonprofits.

A draft of the plan has been submitted to Blount County and the cities of Alcoa and Maryville for their endorsement. It includes urging schools to report homeless children and creating a database to help local nonprofit service providers seek grants and other funding.

In January, the county's annual point-in-time count that's required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development found 373 homeless people in Blount County.
