State Senator Charlotte Burks Not Seeking Re-Election
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State Senator Charlotte Burks said she will not seek re-election next year.
The Monterey Democrat didn't discuss her plans after office with the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, but she said she's satisfied that she's served the 15th District with "honesty and integrity."
Burks has served in the state Senate since 1998. She made Tennessee history when she was elected as the first ever "write-in" candidate to the upper chamber after the death of her husband, State Senator Tommy Burks, who was gunned down by an opponent.
Burks is the second Senate Democrat to not seek re-election. Lowe Finney, who chairs the Democratic caucus in the Tennessee Senate, announced in July that he won't seek a third term.
Burks did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press seeking comment.
