Palm Trees Gaining Popularity In Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A tree once reserved for the sandy shores of Florida has started popping up across Middle Tennessee, and one local business which sells palm trees is having a hard time keeping them in stock.

"There's several different varieties that can live here but this one here can get down to about 10 degrees" explained Jonathan Howlett who owns 'Nashville Palms,' a landscaping business which specializes in planting palm trees.

Howlett said the soil in Tennessee is actually perfect for most palm trees to grow and in one Nashville home he's planted up to 20 of them recently.

"A lot of people are wondering ‘is it gonna live through the winter' and I think once this year goes past and they see a few palms that lived, it will justify their doubt or disbelief," he said.

According to Jonathan, most palm trees still need special fertilizer to promote proper growth. He recommends wrapping them up to keep them warm in the winter, but said it's not a necessity.

"If it's in the right environment it'll take off and it'll grow," he added.

"We wanted a feel around here that was just different, made us feel like we were sort of on vacation when we were outside and the palm trees were the best answer for that," explained Jayne Wochomurka who was having one installed behind her pool in Franklin on Tuesday.

A typical palm tree costs around $500.
