16-Year-Old Driver Injured In Crash That Killed Mother

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police said reckless driving was a contributing factor in a crash that left a teen driver injured and his mother dead in Hermitage on Tuesday night.

Police said 16-year-old Rodney Jones was driving a Nissan Maxima at a high rate of speed along Dodson Chapel Road near Fleetwood Boulevard just before 10 p.m. when he passed another vehicle in a no passing zone.

When Jones attempted to cross back over he lost control, and traveled off the roadway where the car struck a fence and a tree.

Neither Jones nor his mother and front seat passenger, 38-year-old Meklit Melkie, were wearing their seatbelts.

Both were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where Melkie died. Jones suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Jones was driving on an intermediate restricted Tennessee driver's license. No charges have been placed so far.
