Posted: Updated:

MT. JULIET, Tenn. – The pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in Wilson County Wednesday morning has died from his injuries.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said 19-year-old James Buchanan from Antioch was driving on East Division Street with his brother when their car ran out of gas. They left their vehicle on foot to find a gas station.

The brothers were walking eastbound in eastbound lanes of the roadway around 6 a.m. in dark and foggy conditions when an SUV driven by 62-year-old Iris Shelton struck Buchanan.

Investigators said Shelton did not see the brothers in the roadway due to the fog. The posted speed limit was 45 miles per hour.

Buchanan was transported by ground to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with critical injuries.

THP officials said Buchanan later succumbed to his injuries.

Shelton and Buchanan's brother were not injured.

Officials said no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

No citations or charges were expected to be file.
