MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Rutherford County man has been accused of physically assaulting his grandfather.

Officials with the Murfreesboro Police Department said the 74-year-old victim was taken to an area hospital after he was severely beaten. The victim's grandson, 36-year-old Michael Heaverin, was charged with domestic abuse after the attack.

Investigators said the incident happened earlier this week at a home near Ark Lane in Murfreesboro.

"This type of case is certainly not one that our officers are used to getting," said Kyle Evans, with the Murfreesboro Police Department. "Most elderly abuse crimes involve financial or neglect cases."

Detectives said the suspect was intoxicated when he returned to the home and told police he began beating his grandfather after his dog angered him.

According to police reports, the victim was stomped multiple times, causing severe injuries. He suffered two broken ribs, a broken elbow, a collapsed lung and a head fracture.

"This man is in his 70s, and he was basically beaten by someone he trusted," said Evans.

Police said the suspect had a lengthy criminal history.

Investigators said Heaverin could be facing more severe charges, including elder abuse and felony aggravated assault.

The suspect and victim's family declined to comment.
