Group Wants Swim Lane In Tennessee River

Posted: Updated:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) - A proposal is being drafted that would cordon off a portion of the Tennessee River near Chattanooga for swimming.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported the Chattanooga Open Water Swimmers came up with the idea, though it is rife with complications and would need approval from state and federal officials.

Organizer Karah Nazor said it would be a natural move for an outdoors-oriented city. Chattanooga is hosting the U.S. Masters Swimming Open Water National Championships in May and the Ironman triathlon four months later.

Nazor said open water swimmers already use the river every Wednesday, but they face dangers such as watercraft when they do.
