Blountville Students Participate In Living History

Posted: Updated:

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Fifth-grade student Evan Hayes grabbed the old-time musket and grinned.

Hayes, along with other students from across Sullivan County, participated earlier this month in School Days at the Battle of Blountville reenactment. The students learned about life during the Civil War, military tactics, how to fire a cannon, the role of religion during war and the reasons for the battle.

The reenactment started four years ago, when a small group of Civil War enthusiasts gathered in the Sullivan County town. They camped together and reconstructed a small battle scene. Over the years, the event has grown and was moved this year to a small farm near the airport for the 150th anniversary of the battle, which destroyed downtown Blountville.

It was the first time school groups were invited to the event.
