Elderly House Fire Victim Identified

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An elderly woman who was found dead Sunday morning after a house fire has been identified.

Investigators with the Nashville Police Department said the victim has been identified as 82-year-old Helen McMurty of West Nashville.

Officials with the Nashville Fire Department said the fire broke out around 3:50 a.m. Sunday morning at her home on 404 Basswood Drive. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found flames in the front living room area.

Neighbors of McMurty remembered her as a pillar of the community.

"You hate to see someone pass away this way," said Janet Wright, a neighbor of McMurty. "(It's) sad beyond belief."

Fire officials said smoking may have played a role in the fire. The official cause of the fire was still under investigation.

No other injuries were reported.
