Owner Trying To Save Dog From Being Euthanized

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A dog accused of biting an 11-year old girl earlier this month is scheduled to be euthanized, but the dog's owners are hoping surveillance video will shed new light on what happened.

Inside this Super Muffler and Brake on Watts Lane in West Nashville, IT Specialist Bill Kimball was helping to restore surveillance footage from the shop from 11 days ago.

It's from the same day that 11-year old Sylvie Kendi was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center after she was bit in the arm by the store's pit bull mix, Lucy, who's currently in quarantine facing a somber fate.

"She's in grace period, and if the owner doesn't come for her, she'll be put to sleep," said Billy Biggs with Metro Animal Control.

On the day of the attack, Kendi's mother Eunice Nwani had said she wanted someone to take responsibility.

"It's a dog," she said. "The owner has to be responsible for it."

Lucy's owner Ahmed Bahadeen said he and his family have been responsible, and they believe the video and witness accounts prove it, though the video does not show the whole incident.

Store owners believe the young girl would provoke the dogs as she walked by the fence, and may have pulled up the fence to let the dog out. However, witnesses told police the day of the incident that the dog had gotten out on its own and bit the girl as she was waiting for her bus.

"There's no way Lucy would have been able to go out that way, because it's hard to pull her up," said Bahadeen. "Sometime, even in daytime, and customers come and play with Lucy. They love Lucy. I'll tell you I love my dogs, not just Lucy but all of them."

Animal control officers said Lucy hasn't given them any trouble in the 11 days of quarantine and observation.

While the owner initially gave up his rights to Lucy, animal control said he is the only one that can get her back. However, he will have to pay fines when he does.
