Former Lincoln County Official Arrested On Theft Charges

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –  The former superintendent of the Lincoln County Board of Public Utilities was arrested Wednesday morning by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Billy Joe Wiley, 66, was charged with theft of over $60,000.

Charges stem from a TBI investigation following a state audit.  The audit found almost $300,000 had been awarded in bonuses and unworked overtime to utility employees by Wiley without approval from the board's directors.

The money was paid between January 2008 and December 2011.

Wiley's arrest comes a day after being indicted by the Lincoln county grand jury. He was booked into the Lincoln County Jail and released on $10,000 bond.
