SANTA FE, Tenn. – Deputies were called to a Maury County man after they said 31-year old Matthew Johnson shot and killed his wife, Sharon Johnson, before turning the gun on himself.

The shooting happened inside their home in front of their three children.

The incident occurred Thursday around 11:20 p.m. at 3540 Fly Road in Santa Fe, about 10 miles north of Columbia. Officials said they believed it was a domestic situation that turned violent.

According to Sheriff Enoch George, the couple's 13-year-old, 5-year-old and 2-year-old children ran to a neighbor's house next door after the shooting.

A 911 recording obtained by NewsChannel 5 indicates the 13-year old ran to his neighbor's home for help before going back to get his two brothers.

"He is beyond the ability to speak, couldn't even talk to me," said Maury County Sheriff Enoch George. "I can be tough as nails, but you start messing with kids, it hurts me."

Deputies were called in to determine what led to the shooting.

Neighbors said they felt terrible for the children.

"I just feel so sorry for the kids. You know... to be there (during the shooting) and to go through it and see it - that's your parents," said Vanessa Smotherland.

Investigators said they had a few calls out to the home. Those that work at the neighborhood bar said Matthew Johnson had indicated he was having problems in the marriage. They said he even called the bar the night of the tragedy, but no one answered the phone. Johnson had recently be asked not to return to the bar after workers said he was causing problems with other customers.

"So I didn't answer the phone, and I'm wondering if I should have," said Barry Beckemeier, the bar's manager."I still think it in the back of my mind, if I could have made a difference.
