NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A new food pantry program at some Metro Nashville schools is continuing to spread.

The Tennessean reported the initiative that began at John Early Middle School last year has already been added to four other schools.

It started when school and community-based support coordinator Katherine Kendall realized some students didn't have food at home. She said she saw one pick food up out of the garbage to save for later.

The experience led her to ask for help from Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. They worked together to create a food pantry at the school.

Officials said they hope to add up to 12 more schools to the initiative over the next two years.
