FAIRVIEW, Tenn. – A missing elderly woman with Alzheimer's was found near her home in Fairview on Thursday morning.

Authorities said 81-year-old Clara Carter was found in a field a short distance down the road from her home on Fairview Boulevard. Twenty five minutes after calling off the search to focus efforts elsewhere, a citizen identified her and she was rescued just before 10 a.m.

"I'm giving two people credit: the Lord and these police officers," Carter's son Dennis Carter said after his mother was found. "They did a wonderful job. These guys have worked hard on this case. I'm really proud of them."

Those who came out to help in the search applauded when Carter was brought out to an ambulance on a stretcher.

Her condition was not immediately known, but officials on the scene said she was alert when she was found.

"I was over in the field, looking in another pond and my wife called me and said they want us all to come to the house," said Carter. "When we got up there, they told us they found her and she was alive."

Fairview Police Lieutenant Roy Russell said Carter, who has Alzheimer's and other health issues, went missing from her home around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A search began immediately, but was scaled back overnight due to the fog. It resumed just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

She was said to have been wearing sweat pants and a white t-shirt, but was not wearing any shoes.
