Franklin PD Records Video To Clarify 911 System

FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Several Franklin Police officers were camera ready Tuesday night as they recorded a public service announcement.

Franklin Police cruisers and motorcycles were parked on the top floor of the city parking garage on 2nd Avenue, with an officer front and center at the microphone.

The idea for the music video came from Franklin's 911 communication center, to try and curb the number of non-emergency calls made on 911 lines.

"They get priority, and they're tying up a priority line for what could have been an emergency. So as soon as we can get them off that line, the better," explained 911 communications officer Mike Fay.

Employees in the 911 center were asked earlier this year to come up with ideas on how to improve operations. Fay knew he wanted to tackle the issue on non-911 calls.

"I came up with some way of learning that phone number and another officer was good enough to take what I wrote down and put it to music," said Fay.

Fay wrote the lyrics for a song that incorporated the non-emergency number of 794-2513.

The officer who put music to those lyrics, and performed the song, is no stranger to the spotlight. Jeff Carson now protects and serves, but in the late 1990's he was a country music artist.

"I just told them when they were behind me, it's kind of strange because it's encroaching on two different lives here. It's kind of strange," said Carson.

Carson is front and center in this music video, with several other Franklin officers in the background.

The PSA was produced by the television department for the City of Franklin and will air on the city's cable channel.

There are plans to produce and shoot more public service announcements.
