Former Death Row Inmate Speaking Out In Book

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former death row inmate Gaile Owens has told her story in a new book co-authored with her son.

Owens spent more than 20 years behind bars. She was sentenced to death for hiring a stranger to kill her husband nearly 30 years ago. During that time, her son refused to speak to her. She was released from prison nearly two years ago.

Now through a new book, both have told their story of hope and forgiveness.

"I knew that it would be a painful journey," said Owens. "But I think that our story tells that there is hope."

Stephen Owens has now reconciled with his mother, Gaile. He hoped through their new book, the healing process would continue.

"You don't forget we just know we all make mistakes and we're all moving forward," he said.

In the book, Owens talked about the pain of losing both of his parents and allowing himself to forgive his mother.

"I was teaching my kids forgiveness in my own home but if they had asked me if I had forgiven my mother I would have to say ‘no,'" he said.

After her release, she hoped to remain out of the spotlight but now felt her story could make a difference.

"It can happen that you can reconcile you can forgive and move on," she said.

The two said they did not have plans for a book tour at the moment. Owens said she hoped to maintain a private life.
